If you've been using STL Playground for a while, you may notice that things are starting to look, and work, a little different around here.

We've been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to rebuild and improve the platform, modernize our 3D model builders, add new features, and create a better foundation for everything we want STL Playground to become.

And before we get into any of that, we want to make one thing very clear:

If you're using STL Playground to create models for your own personal projects, you can continue using STL Playground for free. You do not need to purchase a subscription just to keep making things.

That matters to us, because the maker community is the reason STL Playground exists in the first place.

So... What's Changing?

A lot, actually — but hopefully in a good way.

What started as a collection of individual 3D model generators has grown into something much bigger. As we've added builders, features, export formats, customization options, and thousands of users, we've also reached the point where we needed to rethink some of the technology underneath it all.

Instead of simply adding another feature here and another builder there, we've been building a more unified STL Playground platform that gives us a much better foundation for the future.

That work is bringing improvements such as:

  • A more consistent experience across our 3D model builders.
  • Improved builder controls, previews, and customization tools.
  • Expanded export options, including formats such as STL, 3MF, and OBJ where supported.
  • Improved support for SVGs, emojis, text, multicolor designs, and other customization options across supported builders.
  • The ability to save designs so you can return to them later.
  • Shareable designs that make it easier to show someone what you've created.
  • Better organization of your models and designs through your STL Playground account.
  • Clearer Personal and Commercial licensing.
  • A common platform that lets us improve existing builders and release new builders much more efficiently.

Some of these features are already appearing across STL Playground, while others will continue rolling out as we migrate and improve our existing builders.

Why Are We Doing This?

Because we want STL Playground to keep getting better.

Creating and maintaining browser-based 3D design tools takes a surprising amount of work. Every new builder brings design work, development, testing, browser compatibility, export functionality, ongoing maintenance, and plenty of "why did that one tiny change break that completely unrelated thing?" moments.

That's part of the fun of building STL Playground — but we also want to create a model that allows us to keep investing in it.

At the same time, we don't believe the answer is simply putting the whole site behind a paywall.

There are students learning about 3D printing. Parents making something fun with their kids. Hobbyists experimenting with a new printer. Makers who need one oddly specific container, tag, cutter, sign, or widget and would rather customize one than spend an afternoon designing it from scratch.

We want those people here.

We want STL Playground to remain a place where someone can open a builder, experiment, create something useful, print it, and have fun with it without needing to turn the experience into another monthly bill.

Personal Makers and Commercial Makers Have Different Needs

We've also learned that not everyone is using STL Playground in the same way.

Some people are designing something for themselves.

Others are running Etsy shops, selling at craft fairs, operating small 3D-printing businesses, taking custom orders, or looking for new products they can offer their customers.

Those are very different use cases, and we think it makes more sense to recognize that difference than to treat every maker exactly the same.

That's why our new licensing approach separates Personal Use from Commercial Use.

Personal makers can continue using STL Playground for their own non-commercial projects without needing a paid subscription.

For makers who want to sell physical prints created with STL Playground, our Commercial options provide a clear license to do exactly that.

We think that's a pretty fair balance: keep STL Playground accessible to hobbyists while giving businesses and professional makers a straightforward way to use the platform commercially.

What About the New Credits?

You may also notice Credits appearing around STL Playground.

Credits are part of the infrastructure we're introducing to manage different types of accounts, usage, exports, subscriptions, and commercial access as the Platform grows.

Seeing Credits does not mean that STL Playground has suddenly become pay-to-use for personal makers.

Free accounts are part of the new system too. You do not need to purchase a commercial plan simply because Credits now exist.

Our goal isn't to turn every button click into a transaction. The goal is to create a system flexible enough to support free personal use, commercial users, additional capabilities, and future features without having to rebuild the business side of the Platform every time we introduce something new.

Please Share What You Make

There's another part of the new licensing approach that's important to us: we want STL Playground designs out in the maker community.

If you create something useful, clever, strange, funny, or just plain cool with STL Playground, you're welcome to share the generated model for free on community model sites such as Thingiverse, Printables, MakerWorld, and similar platforms under our sharing terms.

All we ask is that you credit STL Playground as the tool used to create it and link back to us.

A simple attribution such as "Created with STL Playground — www.stlplayground.com" works perfectly, and linking directly to the builder you used is even better.

We think sharing is good for everyone. You get to contribute something useful to the 3D-printing community, another maker discovers a new model, and maybe that person follows the link back to STL Playground and creates something completely different.

That's exactly the kind of cycle we'd like to encourage.

What If I Want to Sell the Actual STL or 3MF File?

Our standard Commercial License is designed primarily for makers who want to sell physical prints.

If your business model involves selling or commercially distributing the actual digital STL, 3MF, OBJ, or other generated model files, that's a different type of license.

We're open to those opportunities too. Contact us and we can discuss a separate Digital Distribution License based on what you're trying to do.

We'd rather have that conversation and find a way to work together than simply put up a giant "NO" sign.

This Is Also About Building More Builders

One of the biggest reasons for all of this work isn't really Credits or subscriptions at all.

It's builders.

We want to build more of them.

We also want to keep improving the builders that are already here instead of letting them become little islands of old code that get harder and harder to maintain.

The new STL Playground architecture gives us a common foundation for controls, previews, exports, SVG handling, file formats, saved designs, sharing, licensing, and other features. That means improvements we make to the Platform can increasingly benefit multiple builders instead of needing to be reinvented every time.

That's a big deal for where we're trying to take STL Playground.

It means more time spent creating interesting tools and less time rebuilding the same plumbing over and over again.

And Yes, We Know Some People Won't Love Every Change

We also want to acknowledge something instead of pretending it isn't true.

Whenever a free online tool introduces accounts, Credits, subscriptions, or commercial plans, some people are understandably skeptical.

We get it.

The internet has plenty of examples of useful free services slowly putting everything behind subscriptions, reducing what free users can do, and turning simple products into complicated pricing systems.

That's not what we're trying to do here.

We're trying to build a sustainable way to keep STL Playground useful to personal makers while also recognizing that someone using our tools to run a commercial 3D-printing business is getting a different kind of value from the Platform.

Will we get every part of that balance perfect on day one? Probably not.

That's why we want feedback.

If something is confusing, tell us. If a Credit requirement feels unreasonable, tell us. If a builder isn't behaving the way it should, report it. If there's a feature you think would make STL Playground dramatically better, we want to hear that too.

This Platform is going to keep evolving, and community feedback is going to be a big part of deciding what comes next.

What's Next?

More builders. More improvements to existing builders. Better sharing and saved-design tools. More consistent exports. Better multicolor and customization workflows. And plenty of ideas that haven't made it out of the notebook yet.

Most importantly, we're building the foundation that lets us keep doing that work.

If you're here because you like making things, experimenting with your printer, or creating something that didn't exist five minutes ago, we're glad you're here.

If you're turning that passion into a business, we're excited to have a better way to support you too.

STL Playground is changing because we want to keep building it — not because we want to stop people from using it.

So fire up a builder, make something ridiculous, make something useful, share it with somebody, and let us know what you'd like to see us build next.

We're just getting started.
